Our Story
Austin and Jenna met in college and have been doing college ministry together since 2015.
We married in 2019, becoming The Schmidts, and are thrilled to serve y’all (yes, we’re from Texas) through The Waypoint Project.
Austin currently serves as the College Minister at University Christian Church, a Disciples of Christ congregation in Fort Worth. Jenna contributes to the ministry through brainstorming, structural suggestions, and offering another set of eyes.
When Austin began doing college ministry, he needed resources.
He needed advice.
He needed examples.
He needed someone who understood how to build a genuinely inclusive college ministry.
But most of what we found came from conservative and evangelical contexts.
The resources were often useful. But they came with assumptions about theology, students, leadership, and community that did not fit the kind of ministry Austin was trying to create.
So together we did what many progressive college ministry leaders have to do: we adapted.
We translated - we took what was useful, questioned what didn’t fit, and built something more inclusive.
We figured things out.
But eventually, we started asking:
What if the resources existed in the first place?
Jenna encouraged Austin to fill this gap with his own contributions to the field of inclusive college ministry, and eventually he agreed.
That’s why we’re here.
The Waypoint Project is personal to us, and we’re glad you’re here.
The Way we do Ministry
❋
The Way we do Ministry ❋
We believe the best ministry doesn't come from doing more.
It comes from paying attention.
To your students.
To your community.
To your own limits.
To the kind of person and leader you are becoming.
We believe college ministry should be:
INCLUSIVE
We believe people of all backgrounds, identities, and orientations deserve a place to belong and bring their whole selves
THOUGHTFUL
Good ministry requires curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to keep learning.
RELATIONAL
The work is ultimately about people, not programs.
SUSTAINABLE
You cannot continually pour from an empty cup. Healthy ministry requires healthy rhythms.
COLLABORATIVE
The best ideas get better when we share them.
