I believe college ministry may be the most significant, and far-reaching, form of Christian ministry.
I know that’s a substantial claim, especially coming from someone who loves college ministry. Every ministry has something vital to offer, and God certainly doesn’t wait until college to change someone’s life. But I think something particularly important happens in this season.
Let me explain.
For many in today’s world, college holds the pivotal moments in life where young adults decide what kind of person they will become. New freedom, relationships, and experiences all naturally invite them to examine what they believe and how they want to live.
What will they carry forward from growing up years? What will they reconsider? Who do they want to become?
Your college ministry - whatever form it takes - is vital for students at the literal crossroads of their lives. Your community will be one of the many influential factors they will experience amidst their discerning young adult years. You are a significant piece of the world God is creating by shaping the trajectories of students’ lives.
Students might believe they don’t need us to help make their life decisions. And while we might not have every answer for their lives, we can offer good questions and support in their journeys. Young adults need people like us to walk with them, because becoming yourself is difficult work, and no one should have to do it alone.
College ministry communities that give students room to ask honest questions, experience belonging, and practice a faith rooted in the love of Jesus helps them consider not just what they want to do with their lives, but how they want to show up for others.
Life-changing college ministry even creates ripples that go further beyond the students we serve.
College ministry does not just care for individual students, but also for the well being of their potential future spouses, chosen families, co-workers, and broader communities. Your college ministry is making an exponential, compounded, and generational impact.
Your work matters, even when its impact is hard to see or measure.
College ministry is important not just because of who it reaches, but also in how far its influence travels.
