Preparing for the road ahead

All good journeys begin with a plan.

Whether we’re walking around the neighborhood, picking up groceries for the week, or traveling somewhere new, a little preparation helps us navigate what’s ahead. College ministry is really no different.

Before we can plan for our ministry, we need to consider how we are preparing ourselves to lead it.

That’s where we’re starting with Waypoint in 2026!

Over the next few months, Waypoint will explore the foundations that help college ministry leaders thrive in their work and lead communities where college students of all identities can grow.

College Ministry leaders must have a plan for their own thriving in ministry before planning for ministry.

I will provide beginners with key concepts to set you up for success and call veterans back to the basics that may have faded into the background. (No one ever graduates out of these)

Each of these concepts comes from my experience as a college minister in both campus and church settings over nearly 10 years. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I hope what I’ve learned along the way can offer a helpful perspective as you navigate your own work. Think of these as waypoints: reference points to help you find your bearings along the way,  not a map for you to blindly follow. Take what’s helpful, adapt what you need, and leave the rest.

In future blog series, I will discuss ministry practices and suggestions, but it’s essential we start with a solid foundation.

Here’s the roadmap ahead:

  • Why College Ministry

  • Staying Connected to the Source

  • God’s Kingdom > Your Ministry

  • Redefining Success

  • Culture Starts with You

  • God is Doing Things

  • Sabbath Rest in College Ministry

  • Failing Forward

  • Comparison in Moderation

  • You’re Needed, But It’s Not About You

  • What’s Your Vision?

In the coming months, we’ll explore each of these topics together. Whether you’re new to college ministry or have been doing this work for years, there’s always more to learn, reconsider, and rediscover.

I’d love for you to join us as we prepare for the road ahead and share any reflections you have.

Keep following along!
